Guide dogs bring amazing freedom and independence to their handlers.

They help people who are blind, deafblind or have low vision move through busy streets safely and overcome crowded spaces and other everyday obstacles confidently. Guide dogs are a lifeline to freedom – helping their handlers get out and about independently by making public spaces accessible. That’s why these incredible working dogs need the best possible care to stay in tip-top condition.

For the first time in our 134 years of service, we're insuring our working guide dogs, thanks to our partnership with Southern Cross Pet Insurance. It costs about $1,000 a year to insure every dog. And with about 150 working guide dogs across the country, that's $150,000 a year!

Every three hours, someone in New Zealand develops blindness. As our population ages, more people will be blind, deafblind or have low vision. So, demand for our services, including guide dogs, will keep growing.

It takes two years of rigorous training for a guide dog puppy to become a working dog, backed by a team of experts – including nutritionists, breeders, trainers, carers and support workers. These life-changing companions deserve the very best healthcare throughout their working lives. Your generosity helps keep our four-legged heroes healthy and working.

Without your compassion, we couldn't provide the comprehensive insurance coverage these incredible dogs need. From routine checkups to emergency care – your generous gift will help us keep guide dogs across Aotearoa happy and healthy. Thank you.

Together, we can keep NZ’s guide dogs happy and healthy.
